Πρώτη φορά το ακούω, "κυκλοφορεί" καθόλου στην πιάτσα;

:crying:

Υπάρχει τρόπος να ξεχωρίζουν οι δύο εκδόσεις; π.χ. παχος και υφή εξωφύλλου ή ποιότητα εσωτερικών σελίδων κτλ;

Τι 190;

Δυστυχώς, δεν κατάφερα να αποκωδικοποιήσω όλα τα κρυφά νοήματα και αναφορές που περιέχει και γι΄αυτό ήθελα να ρωτήσω αν έχει συναντήσει κανείς πουθενά κάποιον αναλυτικό οδηγό περί του Σιμμιόττο. Ας είναι και στα ιταλικά, δε με πειράζει. Έχει πετύχει κανείς πουθενά κάτι τέτοιο;

Ε;

Όχι;

Μιας και γίνεται συζήτηση- και χαίρομαι που το Σιμμιόττο αρέσει στα μέλη του φόρουμ- παραθέτω ένα κείμενο (δυστυχώς στα αγγλικά), όπως δημοσιεύτηκε στη συλλογή δοκιμίων Aspects of Representation -Studies on Art and Technology: New Technologies in Contemporary Cultural Expression από το Τμήμα Πολιτισμικής Τεχνολογίας και Επικοινωνίας του Πανεπιστημίου Αιγαίου, το 2008. :nek:

Panos Kritikos

Illustrating a Corrupted World: Shades of political corruption in mainstream comics

In the history of sequential art, there is a milestone moment that could be described as the “age of maturity” for the comics medium, marking the passage from the “comic” or “funny” books to the domain of a new art form. This turning point varies according to each country and its particular “comics scene”. In Europe, the thematic transaction to more mature subjects and illustrating techniques coincides with the tempestuous events of 1968 in France and their aftermath all over the continent. This set the stage for political and social relevance in comics – something which had only been implied up to that point.

Every time that milestone moment occurs, comics grow up and race toward adulthood. They begin to record social and political reality, they criticize and comment on current affairs and they gradually shape a new generation of “concerned” audiences. In their attempt to criticize the corruption of the authoritarian powers of their age and to condemn the hypocrisy and conservatism of previous decades, these comics emphasize matters of ethics that, for many years, constituted a taboo for a narrative form based on a readership of minors. The underground artistic movement in Europe and the United States gave birth to a core of artists who embraced the new trends and became the flag bearers of this new approach. Through the artistic underground, free artistic and political expression became the norm, helped immeasurably by the fact that comics flew under the cultural radar thanks to the limited copies of the comic books produced and the even more limited access to wider audiences due to problematic distribution. Consequently, the tolerance of the censorship authorities was higher, avoiding open conflicts: the limited number of readers did not constitute a threat, neither to the comic book industry nor to the ethical codes and norms of society. However, once the spark was lit, it was a matter of time before a fire broke out. The eventual maturity of the readers, in combination with the constantly changing and developing needs of the market, gradually led to the “invasion” of social criticism in the mainstream comic book scene, setting new standards for comics, both as an art form and as a marketing product.

Of course, the industry never ignored the potential of the medium as a means for transmitting views on life and political ideas. In times of crisis, mainstream comics were often used by the big publishing houses for reasons of propaganda, promoting controversial information and transforming an apparently innocent form of entertainment for younger audiences into a conscience former. The case of the Norse thunder god Thor fighting the Latin American and Russian communists in the ’60s (Journey Into Mystery #84 and #87, Marvel Comics) or the representation of the Iranian government in the United Nations by the evil Joker in the ’80s (Batman #429, DC Comics) are characteristic examples of the propagandistic role that comic books may play, and so is the more recent example of the collective reactions of the heroes of Marvel and DC comics to the events that followed 9/11. Through time, illustrated narrative fiction has moved from the realm of mere entertainment to the domain of politics, continuously balancing on the tightrope between art and brainwashing.

In Europe, comics for mature readers became strongly political during the ’70s, adopting an almost limitless satirical and critical attitude, which was supported by the new magazines that flourished at the period and were embraced by a very wide and varied readership. The story of Simmiotto, published serially in the Italian Alter magazine, in 1975, is a representative example of the revolutionary spirit in ’70s comics. Cleverly written by Silverio Pisu and impressively drawn by Milo Manara, the series records episodes from the life of an ape made of stone, adapted for the European comic book market straight from Chinese tradition. Simmiotto made his first appearance in the western world in a novel by Wu Ch’eng-en, a writer whose historical existence is questioned. The book actually consisted of a variety of Chinese myths and its first seven chapters were chosen by the two creators for adaptation to the form of a comic book story. Approaching the story as a commentary on human nature and a reflection of the new social reality imposed by the authorities and the conditions of the period, Manara and Pisu created a sequence of events that form multiple levels of reading and touch upon metaphysical, political, social and ethical matters.

In the Italian language, “Simmiotto” stands both for the word “ape” and the expression “naughty child”. Although born through immaculate conception (in order for his exceptional and charismatic nature to be justified) and despite the messianic role he acquires in the progression of the story, Simmiotto actually stands for the everyman, in the way the term is used in literature since the Middle Ages. Simmiotto represents the human who realizes his inner power and potentiality and starts his own progress to godhood. In contradiction to literary and mystical tradition, Simmioto’s main opponent in this task does not prove to be his own problematic personality, but the established religious and political authorities which pursue the preservation of their power and the desensitizing of the masses. However, to their misfortune, Simmiotto calls himself “conscious of the emptiness” (his desensitized existence) and becomes dedicated to reclaiming the privileges that should accompany his spiritual enlightenment and his social position, as the king of those who dared to change the world (at some point in the story, Simmiotto is actually proclaimed king of the hippies’ movement).  Thus, he collides with the merciless, plump and perverse “Emperor of the World”, who, corrupted by the continuous exercise of power, seeks to control the revolutionary spirit of Simmiotto, initially through the granting of privileges and, once this approach fails, through violence.

Engaged in war with the “Emperor”, Simmiotto comes into open conflict with the three forms of power that constitute the essence of the organization structure of the world: the politicians, the military and the clergy. Having experienced the “search for the divine” through religion, he is led into a spiritual dead end, as he soon realizes that everything offered and acquired through religious tactics and devotion has an exchange value only in an immaterial, posthumous existence, and that the role of the clergy is limited to the control of the masses of believers and the creation of spiritual shepherds. In the story, the reader witnesses this realization in the words of the high priest of the temple visited by Simmiotto, who rushes “to give a name” to the newcomer. Taken in good faith, this could be the first stage in the initiation process of an apprentice, who tries to be released from the binding elements of his earthly identity. However, the reader cannot ignore the allusion to the Old Testament episode in which Adam, under divine order, names every animal in the Garden of Eden in an attempt to acknowledge his superiority over them. The rule is clearly set: Once you name something, you own it, you have power over it.

Similarly, the political forces of the Emperor, addicted to the generous delivery of virtual privileges and meaningless positions of power, try to bribe Simmiotto by offering him the “Ministry of the Immortal Inspector of the Imperial Stables”. This is of course, a standard tactic of deception, for experienced politicians who know how to apply to the vanity of the masses and especially to those imprudent enough to demand such meaningless positions and to claim them. However, their failure to buy off Simmiotto does not leave the establishment much of a choice, and violence appears to be the only solution. With armed forces at his disposal and with the soldiers enthusiastically on his side, the Emperor sets himself against Simmiotto’s frenzy for power and tries to keep the balance. However, a fragile and short-lived peace is imposed only after the intervention of Er-Lang’s Nazi forces (fascism being an annoying but always useful tool to those in power) and the assistance of TV propaganda – a secret weapon, recently introduced to armed warfare. In the end, Simmiotto is defeated by Buddha himself and balance is restored through divine intervention. Apparently, the revolutionary spirit of the ’70s became controllable by traditional means. The old-fashioned but always powerful “divine plan”, which demands from every human to be aware of his social position, in combination to Simmiotto’s personal weakness and failure restored the norms and sealed the fate of Manara and Pisu’s protagonist. The two creators record a world of change and conflict, but the end of the story seems rather pessimistic. The “ideal” world the generation of ’68 fought for is soon leveled by imperialism, while traditional authoritarian forces, though outdated and slothful, manage to preserve power, to manipulate and repress every effort to subvert the existing status quo.

The ’80s brought innovating and radical changes in European economy and its social structure. On the one hand, communist countries remained loyal to their cultural and economical isolation, while, on the other hand, the social and financial polarization, imposed by conservative European governments, enlarged the discrimination gap between those who have and those who have not. The cover of the third issue of the Hellblazer series reflects the anxiety of the era: In an underprivileged neighborhood in London, the star of the series, streetwise occultist John Constantine, passes by a graffiti on a wall warning the reader that “voting Tories can damage your health” while, below it, an altered poster from Margaret Thatcher’s election campaign portrays the “iron lady” with fangs and the Number of the Beast (666) curved on her forehead. The symbolism is clear, humorous and a firm condemnation of the conservative income policy of “Thatcherite Britain”: it portrays it as a vampire that “sucks the blood of the people” and, at the same time, evokes biblical connotations, alluding to the overthrowing of world order by the forces of evil, as described in The Apocalypse of St John the Divine. “The end of days” is here and we live it!

Actually, the clever concept of this cover is more than a simple marketing trick or a glib political statement. The two British creators of this particular issue, Jamie Delano (writer) and John Ridgway (artist), feeling free to express their political beliefs (as their comics are published by DC Comics, an American company in the U.S.), insert these biblical allusions in order to offer a satirical, “cheesy” and uncensored description of the British Elections of ’87, where the conservatives claimed control of the country for the third consecutive time. In the story, John Constantine comes face to face with a group of real demons who live in the slums of London disguised as yuppies. The demons, led by Mammon, “the arch demon of profit”, tempted by the endless possibilities of financial and political climbing the new era offers, are determined to “seize the day” and become regulators of the British economy. As one of them states: “Politically, the time is right. The haves are so terrified of becoming have-nots that it’s dog eat dog up there”. Thus, London is transformed into the financial department of Hell, an impression strengthened by the preference the demons show for slum neighborhoods (which differ little from Hell), as they remain undeveloped and abandoned by the state.

In contradiction to Manara and Pisu’s Simmiotto, the ruling class in Hellblazer is not represented by the traditional forms of authority but by an impersonal, faceless financial elite with dark purposes and even darker methods of action. Government corruption is so deep that it reaches – and entices – Hell. As the reader may see in the pages of Hellblazer, this hell may be very real and symbolically reflected back to our world. Constantine faces the demons and in his own unique way manages to trick them and send them back to the bottomless pits. However, he fails to do the same with the “demons” of the material plane. In the last page of the story, he finds himself tied and hanging from the ceiling, watching the conservatives win another election on TV. Incapable of any reaction, as helpless and impotent as the average British citizens of that time, he mumbles: “Like I said, there’s more than one road to Hell”.

If Delano and Ridgway’s Hellblazer records the pessimistic attitude toward the 80’s newly formed reality, Neil Gaiman and Mike Allred, in their 1993 revival of a long-forgotten DC character from the ’70s, (in #54 of Gaiman’s series The Sandman), chooses a rather optimistic approach and creates an interesting “what if?” of a story. Prez Rickard, at the age of 18, becomes the youngest president of the U.S. and the protagonist of the Prez series, one of the strangest and most uncompromising comic book series DC ever published (lasting a mere 4 issues in 1974). Gaiman’s approach to the character is based on the idea “what if the United States of America were finally led by the perfect president?” Prez Rickard is young, handsome, cultured and, above all, willing and capable of solving every problem that scourges American society. He is the “golden boy” (a fitting characterization that is also the title of Gaiman’s and Allred’s story), a new Messiah who came to save and heal not only the new continent but the rest of the world as well. Gaiman, indeed, gives a biblical proportion to his story, and alluding to Prez as an archetypal savior similar to Jesus Christ. Prez worthily gains the presidency and for eight years everything in the country works properly. Up to the point his service ends…

Gaiman’s story is not dominated by an aggressive or revolutionary spirit but by an optimistic attitude. The corrupted status quo of political authority is represented here through the enigmatic figure of Boss Smiley, who controls politics and economics and is hidden behind every controversial political act. He is portrayed as an elegantly dressed gentleman whose head is substituted by the famous “smile face” sign. This self-proclaimed lord of the world becomes the arch-nemesis of the young president. Prez refuses Smiley’s invitation to rule the world together and keeps him at a distance so as to avoid any possible negative influence. The pure and uncorrupted Prez wins the battle against Boss Smiley and everything he represents and raises himself to a messianic level of existence. However, the roots of evil appear to be much deeper and time becomes its most powerful ally. Gaiman’s optimism loses the battle with time and becomes nothing more than a beautiful memory by the end of Prez’s second presidential term. Prez is retired peacefully and things become normal again. Those who succeeded him are neither good nor bad and definitely do not have the “gift” to awaken people from their political lethargy. There is no more “golden boy” in America.

Gaiman’s critical approach is not turned against traditional forms of authority but mainly against the placidity of the average modern citizen. Citizens of the ’90s are familiar with political corruption, they do not trust the system and they are sure that those in power are able to twist and manipulate circumstances. This form of corruption is impersonal or hidden behind a mask of fake economic growth and false prosperity. People of the ’90s are either unwilling or unable to react. The citizens of America in Gaiman’s and Allred’s story were looking forward to a “golden boy” who would activate their instincts and lead them to salvation. But once the “revolution” started, no one was willing to proceed. Prez became the symbol of a perfect world that never came and the political conflict reaches metaphysical proportions: Good versus Evil. At the end of the story, Boss Smiley is comfortably sitting at his throne and everything becomes clear. Politics, idealism, corruption are all one, part of the same world, the two sides of a coin. Smiley is both God and Devil, the perfect representative of a new era where religious boundaries collapse and values become extinct. In this world everything is business.

The new millennium is marked by the cataclysmic events that followed 9/11 and by the return to the “traditional values” of political corruption. The 21st century did not introduce a brave new world of delight and futuristic miracles but re-activated and re-introduced the “ghosts” of the past. Totalitarianism in economics and politics, xenophobia, racial and religious intolerance are a few of the plagues which dominated the previous century and return to haunt the generations of the new one. Phobias of the past are reflected to the psychology of the future, as can be seen in the Blacksad series, by Diaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido.

Setting their story at the ’50s and using as a protagonist a detective right out of noir pulp fiction, the two creators, both directly and indirectly, record aspects of the political corruption of recent history, balancing their stories between social satire, political criticism and noir adventure. Both their albums Âme Rouge (Crimson Soul, 2005) and Nation Arctique (Arctic Nation, 2003) combine the plot of a crime novel with a direct condemnation of McCarthyism. The thematic return of Canales and Guarnido, in two 48 page albums, to the red and atomic “threats”, racism the policies that have marked the fate of western world is not just a coincidence. As they have chosen to portray each character in their stories with the respective face of the animal which best applies to their personality, they analogously compare the political corruption of the past to its modern representation. For the creators of Blacksad albums, history works in circles. Senator Gayo’s political statements about the communist threat and the sanctity of the nation, in the pages of Âme Rouge, do not really differ from modern, similar opinions uttered by politicians like George Bush Jr. or Silvio Berlusconi; neither does the Arctic Circle group’s fascist obsession with racial purity differ from the ideology of the extreme right-wing parties of today. Although we do not live in the ’50s, we are completely familiar with the particular policies and ideology. And the tragedy is that this familiarity does not derive from our excellent knowledge of history but from our actual experience of these phenomena, which are re-introduced to the political scene of the 21st century.

In general, the comics industry avoids politics and definitely does not support specific political positions. Above all, it is entertainment. However, it is used, from time to time, as a medium which controls social opinion and it is often proved a very powerful shaper of conscience. The ambiguity in reading a comic book story is clearly a matter of perception, both of the reader and the artist. And art can be very political, irrespectively of times or social reality.
