Πολλά ωραία πράγματα κρύβει στις σελίδες του ο κατάλογος του Απριλίου, που μας ενημερώνει για τα κόμικς και τα λοιπά σχετικά (και μη) αντικείμενα που θα κυκλοφορήσουν από τον Ιούνιο και μετά.
 
Από τις 25 προτάσεις μου γι αυτόν το μήνα οι 21 είναι κόμικς, 2 είναι artbooks και 2 merchandise. Υπάρχουν νέες εκδόσεις που με χαροποιούν ιδιαίτερα (όπως το "BIG BOOK" του KALUTA) ενώ υπάρχουν και άλλες που μου προκαλούν κατάθλιψη (όπως η επανέκδοση των SANDMAN AND DEATH BOOKENDS γιατί γνωρίζω πολύ καλά πως ούτε και αυτή τη φορά θα καταφέρω να τα αποκτήσω).

Basil Wolverton, best known for his goofy grotesqueries in the pages of MAD and other humor comics, was also responsible for some of the wildest and most eye-popping science fiction and horror comics of the Golden Age, but his non-humorous comics work has never had the comprehensive archival collection it deserves — until now.

Creeping Death from Neptune presents an overview of Wolverton’s entire career, focused primarily on his 1938-1952 science fiction and horror comics. Apart from Spacehawk, which is collected in a separate Fantagraphics volume, every known story from this period, both published and unpublished, is compiled here in its entirety, painstakingly restored from their original printed source — the comic books themselves.


The narrative begins at Wolverton's childhood and traces the events leading up to his first serious comics work, the rejected 1929 syndicated strip, Marco of Mars, then proceeds through Steve Grover of the Stratosphere Patrol, Vultures of the Void, Meteor Murphy, Space Patrol and Rockman. His final group of 1950-1952 stories for Marvel and publisher Stanley Morse includes some of the most intense horror and science-fiction stories of the pre-code era, such as the classics "Brain Bats of Venus," "Nightmare World," and "The Eye of Doom," all included here. The book ends with a summation of Wolverton’s career after leaving — and occasionally returning to — comics, though never again as a non-humorous artist. Ephemera and artifacts shedding intimate insight into the artist’s career are examined in depth.


As with editor Greg Sadowski's previous collections of vintage comics (such as the best-selling Supermen! and Four Color Fear), the digital restoration of the printed art has been performed with subtlety and restraint, mainly to correct registration and printing errors, with every effort made to retain the flavor of the original comic books. Sadowski has also gone to great lengths to uncover as much unpublished art as possible, including preliminary drawings, syndicated strips, pulp illustrations, and lost comic book treasures such as four fully realized 1940 rejected covers for Amazing Mystery Funnies and Amazing Man Comics.

Αν δεν έχει πέσει στα χέρια σας το εξαιρετικό Wake των Scott Snyder και Sean Murphy μην αμελήσετε να προπαραγγείλετε τον πρώτο τόμο.

Για όσους δεν το γνωρίζουν ήδη, η Diamond Comic Distributors είναι ο μεγαλύτερος προμηθευτής (χονδρέμπορας) των εξειδικευμένων καταστημάτων με κόμικς στα αγγλικά. Μέσα από τον κατάλογο Previews της εν λόγω εταιρείας, τα καταστήματα λιανικής έχουν τη δυνατότητα να προπαραγγείλουν προιόντα που θα κυκλοφορήσουν στην αγορά δύο μήνες αργότερα (σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις μπορεί και παραπάνω). Ο κατάλογος έχει συνήθως γύρω στις 400 σελίδες και συνοδεύεται από έναν δεύτερο κατάλογο 100 σελίδων αποκλειστικά για τα προϊόντα της Marvel Comics.


 


Οποιοδήποτε ελληνικό κατάστημα με κόμικς κι αν επισκεφθείτε, θα μπορέσετε είτε να αγοράσετε το συγκεκριμένο κατάλογο (5 ευρώ περίπου) είτε να τον ξεφυλλίσετε στο κατάστημα, και αν βρείτε κάτι που σας ενδιαφέρει να το παραγγείλετε.

Όντως η γραμματοσειρά είναι λίγο περίεργη

Συμφωνώ απόλυτα μαζί σου. Θα περιμένω κι εγώ το hardcover (που ελπίζω ότι θα υπάρξει και θα έχει λογικά αρκετά τσιμπημένη τιμή). Αν το πρόσεξες η τιμή του πρώτου trade ειναι πάρα πολύ καλή, κάνοντάς το αρκετά προσιτό για πολύ κόσμο. Μετά τα Joe the Barbarian και Punk Rock Jesus, έχω γίνει μεγάλος φαν του Sean Murphy...

Αν προσέξετε γράφει Special #1, οπότε μήπως είναι ένα 100-page τεύχος με τα πρώτα 5 τεύχη; Άλλωστε, η τιμή είναι εξαιρετικά απίθανη για trade (εξαιρείται η Image).

Θα μπορούσε, αλλά είναι παράδοση στη Vertigo εδώ και χρόνια το πρώτο τομάκι μιας σειράς να κοστολογείται στο δεκαδόλαρο για να προσελκύσει ευκολότερα νέους αναγνώστες (κάτι που κάνει και η Image). Δείτε και άλλους αντίστοιχους τόμους και θα διαπιστώσεται πως και εκεί κάνουν το ίδιο. Αν όμως δεν υπάρχει η ένδειξη TPB στο solicitation τότε πρόκειται όντως για σπέσιαλ τεύχος. Πάντως το "The Wake είναι όντως πολύ καλό. Όχι αριστούργημα, αλλά αξίζει να το διαβάσετε (με την προυπόθεση ότι θα συνεχίσει έτσι μέχρι το τέλος φυσικά...) Και επι τη ευκαιρία, να σημειώσω πως μου άρεσε πολύ το "Trillium" του Jeff Lemire αλλά και το νέο run του "Astro City".

Το πρώτο τεύχος του Trillium μου άφησε ανάμεικτα συναισθήματα. Θα περιμένω να κυκλοφορήσουν αρκετά τεύχη και μετά θα το συνεχίσω..

 

Οσον αφορά το Wake, θεωρώ θετικό το να έχει μορφή σπεσιαλ τεύχους καθώς τα τεύχη τυπώνονται σε καλύτερο χαρτί απο τα trades. Οι λεπτές γραμμές του σχεδίου του Murphy και τα εξαιρετικά χρώματά του θα "πνιγούν" στο "γκοφρέ" χαρτί των trades, ενώ αντίθετα το ιλουστρασιόν χαρτί των τευχών τα αναδεικνύει.

Είμαι σίγουρος πως το Wake Part One θα είναι όπως τα DC Comics Presents και Vertigo Resurrected που επανακυκλοφόρησαν το 2010. Prestige Format τευχάκια με λεπτό σχετικά χαρτί για εξώφυλλο όμως, συγκέντρωναν 4 τεύχη (των 22 σελίδων - 96 συνολικά με εξώφυλλα και ελάχιστες διαφημίσεις) που αν θυμάμαι καλά έκαναν κάπου 8 δολάρια. Ε, λίγες περισσότερες σελίδες αυτό, λίγο ακριβότερο.
 
Ήταν από τις αγαπημένες μου εκδόσεις τότε, που δυστυχώς σταμάτησαν. Είχα τιμήσει αρκετά. Θα ήταν μια πολύ καλή ευκαιρία να επανακυκλοφορήσουν τετράτευχες σειρές, που δεν είναι εύκολο να βρεθούν πια. Και μάλιστα σε έκδοση καλύτερης ποιότητας από όταν είχαν κυκλοφορήσει αρχικά. Όταν στο περσινό LSCC είχα δώσει το Jack Cross να μου το υπογράψει ο Gary Erskine, είχε πάθει πλάκα με το πόσο πιο ωραία φαινόταν η δουλειά του.

 

Στην συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση θα περιμένω την Deluxe έκδοση που είμαι επίσης σίγουρος πως θα ακολουθήσει.

Mιας και μιλαμε για Sean Murphy αρχισα και γω να γινομαι φαν του.Ελεγα να τσεκαρω το Joe The Barbarian που εκανε με τον Μορρισον και μου αρεσε η δουλεια του στο προσφατο Miniature Jesus.

 

Φαντάζομαι εννοείς το Punk Rock Jesus του Murphy...

Όμως μιας και το ανεφερες, καλό φαίνεται και το Miniature Jesus από Ted McKeever. Το έχεις διαβάσει;

Μετά από μια "μικρή" διακοπή, επιστρέφω στη "στήλη" μου για τις νέες κυκλοφορίες που περιέχει ο κατάλογος της Diamond.
Επειδή βαριέμαι να γράφω πολλά πολλά, αλλάζω το φορμάτ των ποστ μου και προσθέτω links στην ιστοσελίδα της Westfield comics (όχι ότι το προτείνω ως κατάστημα, απλά με βολεύει πολύ ο τρόπος που ανεβάζουν κάθε μήνα τα περιεχόμενα του Previews...)

Μία είναι η σειρά που ξεχωρίζει για εμένα από το κατάλογο Φεβρουαρίου: 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank του Matthew Rosenberg που μας έδωσε το υπέροχο We Can Never Go Home.

 

Διάβασα τα 5 τευχάκια του We Can Never Go Home... Πολύ καλό. Με εντυπωσίασε το ότι ενώ το σενάριο βασίζεται σε ένα χιλιοειπωμένο concept καταφέρνει να του δώσει εξαιρετική φρεσκάδα, και να με κάνει από το πρώτο τεύχος να ενδιαφερθώ για τους κύριους χαρακτήρες. Το σχέδιο μου άφησε ανάμεικτες εντυπώσεις. Κάποιες φορές εξαιρετικό, κάποιες άλλες "στο πόδι". Το χρώμα πολύ καλό, έως και εξαιρετικό.

Νομίζω θα κυκλοφορήσει και δεύτερο mini series; Αν ναι, δε θα παραλείψω να το τιμήσω...
